Tourism in the shires by Danielle Long Hornsby Advocate
31 January 2007. HORNSBY and Baulkham Hills Councils have joined forces to increase tourism across the shires.
Dubbed a ``tourism alliance'', the initiative hopes to attract tourists to the region by jointly promoting local attractions and accommodation.
``The two shires have a lot in common so it makes sense to combine our resources to promote the area as a visitor destination,'' Hornsby Mayor Nick Berman said.
``Last year Hornsby Council launched an economic development strategy for the shire -- tourism forms an important part of that strategy.''.....More

Evans & Lyons champion Dural Service Centre amendments
by Greg Bepper
21 December 2006. Hornsby Shire Councilors Steve Evans (pictured left) and Mark Lyons (pictured right) lead the charge to the review of the permissible land use within the Dural Service Centre.
A 52 page submission by the Dural Service Centre Business Group at the December planning meeting called for Hornsby Shire Council to consider amendments to the range of permissible land uses and the planning controls for the Dural Service Centre.
Both Clrs Evans and Lyons spoke at length of the need for Hornsby Council to consider the review of this Local Environment Plan (LEP) in the shortest time frame possible. This to ensure, if approved, the relevant submissions can be lodged with the State Government and the growth of this emerging business sector can be a competitive force in reply to the fast business immigration by large corporations to neighbouring Shires.
Councillor Evans moved, seconded by Councillor Lyons that once the rezoning application fee had been received, a Working Party be established to oversee the review of the rezoning submission comprised of Councillors, four (4) stakeholders and representatives from the Planning and Strategy Division including Council's Executive Planner and Manager, Town Planning Services.
“We might as well throw our recently developed, Economic Management Plan in the bin if we can’t be flexible enough to consider planning amendments that have the potential to attracting a great deal of business and employment to this Shire in a reasonable timeframe.” said Evans, “I have given this motion a great deal of thought and feel it is the best possible outcome for the present”
Support for this motion was also forthcoming from Mayor Nick Berman and Clr McIntosh with commitment and leadership needed by this council to ensure that economic opportunities for now and the future are not lost to undue over caution.
A foreshadowed motion by Councillor Horne, seconded by Councilor McMurdo opted to take the recommendation by town planning to consider the submission concerning the permissible uses for the Dural Service Centre during the preparation of Council's comprehensive LEP to be completed within five (5) years.
The lengthy time period of this recommendation which carries the potential of many missed business development opportunities did not impress the majority of Councillors as the Evans/Lyons motion was approved with a vote of six (6) to two (2)
The approval of this motion was a sensible outcome to the representatives of the Business Group and the Hornsby Chamber of Commerce who spoke earlier this night of the imperative need for this outdated LEP to be reviewed to reflect the current business requirements and potential of this area.

Camera study for mall by Danielle Long Hornsby Advocate
20 December 2006. HORNSBY Chamber of Commerce has welcomed Hornsby Council's decision to further investigate the installation of a closed-circuit television (CCTV) system in Hornsby Mall.
Councillors voted last week to take a closer look at the installation of CCTV once a community safety committee is established early next year.
State Government guidelines for the establishment and implementation of CCTV in public places require a local safety committee be set up before CCTV can be installed in a public area...... More
